[en] Antoni and Elisabet Baurier and Marta de Ana are the creative trio behind the project “Recycled Tales” from Vabau. It’s a sustainable initiative which presents the stories, that they themselves write and illustrate, along with the puppets that appear in them which are made from recycled materials. Apart from the children’s stories, they are also connected to other projects which combine creativity, recycling and childhood themes such as the design of the kids’ knobs from Viefe®. In this interview we will get to know them a little more.
In which areas do you develop your creativity?
Mainly in the creation of stories for children, both those that can be found in bookshops (The Scatterbrained Rabbit, Phenomenal Animals and The Short-legged Giraffe) as well as those tailor-made for customers who ask for exclusive stories. We have also done work in other fields such as the design of knobs for kids’ rooms, the creation of a mascot for the infants’ area in a library, the image to accompany an advertising campaign to promote the recycling of oil in schools, the logo and the bags for a project designed to provide books for nurseries…
How did your collaboration with Viefe® get started?
Initially they contacted us as they were looking for a system to make “plain” knobs from material and then the project continued to evolve until it gave fruit in the form of the three knob collections that we have created up to now: The explorers; Animal Dreams and Magic Balloons. We love all three of them as they each has a little story behind it and, what’s more, the characters keep on growing and add to the family.
How does your creative process work?
Before starting on any project we come up with a concept which can be explained in the form of a story. From there, we develop the image of the characters in the story, we define their individual traits, we decide which type of product would be most suitable for each of the characters and then we have a look at how we can bring them to life using recycled or sustainable materials. The rest just flows.
A color
Any that forms part of the rainbow.
A material
Cloth (if it’s a recycled garment, the all the better).
A carácter
Phenomenal animals.
What are the essential characteristics of kids’ bedrooms…
Colours, stories, pillows to have fights and imaginative sleeping bags.
What is your favourite style of decoration?
We love Swedish decoration. The furniture and the walls in our studio are completely white and all the different tones of colour come from the books, the materials and the thousands of gadgets we’ve acquired over time.
Which room in your house do you prefer?
Marta and Antoni prefer the living-room – study which they’ve recently built nd have filled with little drawers. Elisabet prefers the kitchen where she does little actual cooking and so has transformed it into an extension of her office, “in the heat of the kitchen, our hottest ideas often come about” she says.
Of all the products you’ve designed for Viefe®, which do you prefer and why?
Marta and Elisabet are crazy about the dolls that hang from the balloons. Antoni prefers the animals that sleep peacefully.
