[en] The designer Alexis Vivet has been collobarating with our projects for a long time, designing knobs and handles that have been a real success. Now we’d like to find out a little bit more about him, and you can too with this interview.
Alexis, tell us a little about your career up to now.
My relationship with the world of design started when I was Young. My father, who was a carpenter and manufacturer, finally set up a small studio for furniture design.
I then studied to be an interior designer at the Elisava School in Barcelona. At that time, once I had finished my studies, I had to complete a project as part of my degree course in order to obtain my honours degree. I won first prize for my end-of-degree project, a prize which was awarded to the best project adjudicated by the Guild of Interior Decorators of Barcelona. From that moment on, I continued to work at the family office and after some time I started to build-up my own portfolio of customers from the area of Industrial Furniture Production: La Garriga; Antaix in La Cenia and Danona in the Basque Country. This also included the nationwide furniture store Kibuc. In more recent times I have worked in collaboration with Jordi Dedeu and with him I have been able to work on various projects in China. My relationship with the world of handles comes from some way back when the design of a piece of furniture also included the design of the handle.
In which industrial sectors do you work?
A wide range of sectors. Apart from those historic clients from the furniture world, I’ve also collaborated with companies involved with lighting, garden furniture, bathrooms, ironworks and mechanisms. I’ve also done some private consultancy work as an interior designer as well as the design of workspaces. All this has been done with the help of technology both for the design process and the final presentation. That is why I’ve also been working continually in the growing market of CGI (Computer-Generated Imaginery) or more specifically in the creation of virtual images for presentations, advertising or catalogues.
How and why did you start to collaborate with Viefe®?
I had always perceived Viefe as being a young, dynamic company. They had a catalogue with elegant, modern pieces and, more specifically, some of those manufactured in acrylic were strikingly original in comparison to other brands. I started my collaboration as a result of my request to evaluate costs of production for a handle especially designed for a furniture program. From that first meeting, the possibility arose for me to carry out design work specifically for a client of Viefe and from those designs a few were chosen to appear in the general catalogue.
Describe to us the design process behind a knob or a handle.
I don’t think there is that much difference from the design of other products. In my case, the requests that come to me from the company are put into what I call “the cloud” where they meet with previous moments of inspiration, images, shapes, types of finish and then when they reach a certain point; they appear in the form of a sketch. I then work on it with computerized technology, during the course of which its volume starts to evolve until I arrive at the final design proposal. Sometimes I come up with more than one proposal depending on the basis of my original idea.
What inspires you?
In general, I’m inspired by my own everyday surroundings, by shapes which impact on me through my own perception and then stay on in the memory.
A colour
At this particular moment, turquoise. At any other moment it could be a different one.
A material
It’s difficult to choose. They all transmit something. Any if it has been well worked on.
A style of interior design that you like
The same as always for me, minimalist. Of the most recent design movements, I prefer the more industrial aesthetic.
Which is your favourite part of the house?
At this particular moment I’m in the middle of moving, putting the finishing touches to an open style loft space. You can always find a corner there that adapts to any particular moment.
Which of the products that you’ve designed for Viefe®, gives you the most satisfaction? Why?
I’d have to choose the Cutt handle. In fact I’m just waiting for the first units to arrive so I can decorate my house. It’s a handle with really simple shapes, but with a lot of personality. Since we presented Tamm, personally I have wanted a version without edges. Then the opportunity was presented to me for it to be included in the catalogue. The Barcco model is also one of my favourites for the same reasons.
